Instagram Insights shows interactions and accounts reached, but no engagement rate. These are the two ways to calculate it, and this calculator runs both.
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ accounts reached × 100. It measures how people who actually saw the post responded, so it is the fairest way to judge a single Reel or post. Enter the reach from Insights and the calculator switches to it.
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100. Follower counts are public and reach is not, so this is the version to quote when you compare accounts. From outside an account you can count likes, comments and Reel shares, but not saves.
This calculator adds likes, comments, saves and shares, the four interactions Instagram Insights reports for each of your posts.
Reels usually reach more non-followers than feed posts, so their rate by followers can look high while their rate by reach looks ordinary. Compare formats by reach.
Published Instagram benchmarks disagree by as much as ten times, because each counts different interactions. The same account can look weak on one and strong on another, so check how a figure was measured before you compare.
| Source | What it counts | Published figures |
|---|---|---|
| HypeAuditor, State of Influencer Marketing 2026 (reported by eMarketer) | (likes + comments) ÷ followers, creators, 2025 data | 1,000 to 10,000 followers: 1.78%; 10,000 to 50,000: 0.54%; over 1 million: 0.33% |
| Upfluence (2024) | likes, comments, shares, saves and clicks ÷ followers | 10,000 to 50,000: 3.45%; 50,000 to 100,000: 3.12%; 100,000 to 500,000: 2.37%; over 500,000: 1.93% |
| Modash help center (2026) | what counts as good, median likes ÷ followers | under 10,000: 5% to 10%; 10,000 to 100,000: 3% to 7%; 100,000 to 1 million: 1% to 3%; over 1 million: 0.5% to 2% |
| Quid and Rival IQ (2026) | all interactions ÷ followers, brand accounts | median post: 0.30% |
Rates fall as follower counts rise in every source. Compare a likes-and-comments rate with the first row, and a rate that includes saves and shares, as this calculator's does, with the second.
| Grade | Engagement rate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 5% or more | Above the HypeAuditor and Upfluence averages on this page for every account size. |
| Great | 3% to 5% | Around the highest Upfluence average (3.45%) and inside Modash's good range for 10,000 to 100,000 followers. |
| Average | 1.5% to 3% | In line with Upfluence's averages above 50,000 followers and HypeAuditor's under 10,000. |
| Below average | Under 1.5% | Normal for large accounts counted by likes and comments (0.33% over 1 million). On a small account, check for inactive or fake followers. |
The thresholds this calculator uses for Instagram, by reach or by followers. Small accounts often score higher than large ones, so compare yourself with accounts of your size.
An account with 18,000 followers posts a Reel that reaches 11,300 accounts and gets 620 likes, 45 comments, 90 saves and 35 shares: 790 interactions.
By reach: 790 ÷ 11,300 × 100 = 6.99%, graded excellent. By followers: 790 ÷ 18,000 × 100 = 4.39%, graded great. The first tells you the Reel landed with the people who saw it; the second is the number a brand would see from outside.
Bought and abandoned accounts sit in the follower count and never interact, so a large account with a very low rate by followers is worth auditing before any deal.
Followers gained through follow-back schemes or giveaway entries rarely care about the content, which dilutes the rate the same way bots do.
Engagement pods and purchased likes inflate interactions. Repetitive comments like "Great post!" arriving within minutes of posting, from the same accounts each time, are a tell.

Add likes, comments, saves and shares on a post. Divide by the accounts reached for the rate by reach, or by followers for the rate by followers, then multiply by 100. Reach is in the post's insights; followers are on the profile.
It depends on what you count. By likes and comments per follower, HypeAuditor's 2026 report put creators at 1.78% under 10,000 followers and 0.33% above 1 million. Counting saves, shares and clicks too, Upfluence measured 1.93% to 3.45% for accounts above 10,000. This calculator grades 5% or more as excellent and 3% to 5% as great.
Reach, to judge your own posts: it counts only people who saw them. Followers, to compare accounts, because anyone can see follower counts but only the owner sees reach. Always say which one you used.
Only if you choose to. The calculation runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to ChamsPilot or stored unless you press Save to my account.
Yes. A save or a share shows more intent than a like, and you can see both for your own posts in Instagram Insights. Saves are private to the account owner, so when you check someone else's account you can usually count only likes and comments, which gives a lower rate than the owner sees.
Add up the likes and comments on their last 10 to 12 posts, divide by the number of posts, then divide by their follower count and multiply by 100. Skip pinned posts and ads. If the account hides its like counts the public numbers will not add up, so ask for Insights screenshots before you agree a fee.
