Calculate engagement per view or per subscriber for a YouTube video or Short. Nothing you type leaves your browser unless you choose to save it to your account.
YouTube Studio reports likes, comments, shares and views for every video, but no engagement rate. This calculator divides by views when you have them and by subscribers when you do not.
(likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100. It measures the video itself, which is what a sponsor is buying, and it is the formula to use for Shorts.
(likes + comments + shares) ÷ subscribers × 100. A rough channel-level check. It falls as a channel's subscribers stop watching, even when the videos themselves are well received.
This calculator adds likes, comments and shares. Dislikes are private to the channel and are not engagement a sponsor can see, so leave them out.
Per subscriber, rates are higher on small channels and fall as channels grow: Upfluence measured 5.43% for channels under 10,000 subscribers and 2.82% above 500,000. Shorts sit much lower when measured by subscribers; Socialinsider put them at 0.30% in 2026.
| Subscribers | Median (likes + comments) ÷ views |
|---|---|
| 1,000 to 10,000 | 3.77% |
| 10,000 to 100,000 | 3.84% |
| 100,000 to 1 million | 3.29% |
| Over 1 million | 2.56% |
| All channels | 3.67% (half of channels between 1.90% and 6.44%) |
CreatorDB (August 2026): 1,466,581 channels with 1,000 or more subscribers, averaged over each channel's 20 latest uploads per format. Measured before YouTube began counting a public view as soon as playback starts (August 24, 2026), which can make newer per-view rates read lower.
| Grade | Engagement rate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 4% or more | Above the by-views median for every channel size on this page. |
| Great | 2% to 4% | Inside the middle half of channels by views (1.90% to 6.44%). |
| Average | 1% to 2% | Near the bottom quarter of channels by views, which starts at 1.90%. |
| Below average | Under 1% | Well under most channels by views. Check for bought views or inactive subscribers, or a content and audience mismatch. |
The thresholds this calculator uses for YouTube. Per-view rates are the fairer comparison on YouTube, because many of a video's viewers are not subscribers.
A video gets 30,000 views, 1,100 likes, 140 comments and 60 shares: 1,300 interactions, on a channel with 52,000 subscribers.
Per view: 1,300 ÷ 30,000 × 100 = 4.33%, graded excellent. Per subscriber: 1,300 ÷ 52,000 × 100 = 2.5%, graded great. The gap is normal on YouTube, where many subscribers never see a given upload.
Since August 24, 2026, YouTube counts a public view as soon as playback starts, in every format; Shorts had counted that way since March 2025. Earnings still use engaged views.
More counted views and the same likes and comments mean a lower rate per view, so compare a new video with videos posted after the change, and a benchmark measured before it only with care.
They never watch or like, so the rate per subscriber sinks while the subscriber count grows. A channel whose videos get a small fraction of its subscriber count in views, month after month, is worth checking.
View bots inflate the denominator of the per-view formula without likes or comments, so the rate per view drops sharply on the videos they hit. A sudden spike in views with no matching likes is the pattern.
Subscribers traded with other channels behave like bought ones: they inflate the count and dilute every rate.

By likes and comments per view, CreatorDB's 2026 study of 1.47 million channels found a median of 3.67%, with half of channels between 1.90% and 6.44% and lower rates above 1 million subscribers (2.56%). This calculator grades 4% or more as excellent and 2% to 4% as great.
Add likes, comments and shares on a video, divide by its views and multiply by 100 for the rate per view. Divide by subscribers instead for the rate per subscriber. YouTube Studio shows all four numbers for every video.
People watch longer videos and interact less often per view, and a channel's subscribers do not see every upload. Compare a YouTube rate with other YouTube channels of similar size, not with a TikTok account.

Yes. Shorts are watched in a swipe feed and long videos are chosen on purpose, so their like and comment rates are not comparable. Calculate each format on its own and compare Shorts with Shorts, long videos with long videos.
Open the video in YouTube Studio, go to Analytics and switch to advanced mode. You can add likes, comments and shares next to views for any date range. Use the same date range for every number you enter here.
